Clotting Cascade Flashcards
What is the MOA of Warfarin?
It decreases the amount of active Vitamin K, which is required by gamma-glutamylcarboxylase, due to its ability to inhibit epoxide hydrolase
What clotting factors does Warfarin inhibit?
II, VII, IX, X, and proteins C and S
How long after giving warfarin is its full effect seen?
Not for 48 hours
Is the extrinsic or intrinsic pathway quicker acting?
Extrinsic
What activates the extrinsic pathway?
External damage
What activates the intrinsic pathway?
Intrinsic damage
What is the primary difference between primary and secondary hemostasis?
Secondary makes a stronger plug by generating a fibrin mesh on the primary plug
What is vitamin K used for in a clinical setting?
It is given to patients with mucosal bleeding to overcome to effects of Warfarin
What is the time frame for administration of tPA for stroke?
Within 3 hours of onset of symptoms
