Clostridium Difficile Flashcards
1
Q
What factors cause immune system to overlook C. diff?
A
Spores of C. diff are apart of the normal flora in the gut. They do not pose a threat unless the normal bacterial flora of the colon is disrupted.
(Which in this case is C. diff).
2
Q
Pathophysiology of C. diff?
A
- Spores are apart of normal flora in the gut.
- Use of antibiotics can kill “good” bacteria - leading to a lowered resistance to a C. diff bacteria.
- When normal flora of gut is eradicated, this provides C. diff bacteria a proper environment to multiply and produce its toxins.
- Release of toxins -> mucosal damage, inflammation.
3
Q
What are the resistance issues with C. diff?
A
–
4
Q
What is the trend of mortality with C. diff?
A
C. diff causes diarrhea linked to 14,000 US deaths each year.
5
Q
- How do you get C. Diff?
A
- Overuse of antibiotics.
- Weak immune system from chronic major illness.
- Women > 65
- Prolonged use of antibiotics
6
Q
- How do you prevent C. Diff?
A
- Isolation.
- Take entire antibiotic treatment.
- Wear disposable PPE, hand hygiene, clean products
