Clostridium Botulinum Flashcards
Clostridium Botulinum- micro
Gram +
bacilli
anaerobes
highly resistant endospores
Clostridium botulinum- toxin
preformed toxin that is ingested
heat labile and enzyme resistant
segmented- B fragment binds to receptor, A fragment enters cell via endocytosis
Clostridium botulinum- potency
most potent
Clostridium botulinum- incubation
2 days
Clostridium botulinum- pathology
blocks Ach release in PNS –> paralysis
Clostridium botulinum - diagnosis
Hx
clinical
EMG
toxin found in feces
Clostridium botulinum- immunity
No Ab’s are formed after exposure= exposure doesn’t protect you from future nfection
Clostridium botulinum- prevention
NO VACCINE
canning techniques
boil canned foods
Clostridium botulinum- tx
- antitoxin
- supportive care for breathing
- full recovery since new synapses form
Clostridium botolinum- epidemiology
home canning, specific food outbreaks
Clostridium botulinum symptoms
- descending paralysis (starts with cranial nerves) weakness dizziness dry mouth diploplia/ blurred visio respiratory paralysis postural Hypotension Pt is alert and oriented
Clostridium Botulinum- food borne
from canning –> ingestion of preformed toxins
Clostridium Botulinum - infant
baby ingests the bacteria, not preformed toxin –> bacteria produce toxin in the baby’s intestine –> floppy baby, reduced sucking, constipation
Clostridium botulinum- wound
RARE
occurs in deep vascular wound
leukocytosis and FEVER
Clostridium botulinum- adult intentions
intestinal colonization due to achlorhydria, GI disease, post op.
