Closed Head TBIs Flashcards
Closed injuries
damage to the brain that doesn’t break open the skull and penetrate the cerebral meninges surrounding the brain
SKULL REMAINS INTACT
Tow categorizations of TBI
Acceleration-Deceleration injuries
Impact-based injuries
Acceleration-deceleration closed head injuries
when the brain is moving very fast through space (acceleration) and then come to a very abrupt halt (deceleration)
Coup-contrecoup
Coup: severe first hit or impact to the brain
Countercoup: secondary impact of the brain
Not constrained to an anterior-posterior profile in the brain
G-force
Brain can be damage due to high levels of g-force
G - gravitational
Force - amount of force exerted on an object
Diffuse axonal shearing
when neuronal connections are pulled apart, microlesions are created across large areas of the brain
Impact-Based Closed Head TBI
TBI occurs when head is being struck by a moving object
