IRON STUDIES
A
- Serum iron
- low levels = iron deficiency anemia, chronic GI bleed, eavy menses
- High levels = hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis
- Total iron binding capacity (transferrin level)
- low levels = cirrhosis, SCD, pernicious anemia
- High levels = iron deficiency anemia, PRC

PT and PTT
A
- PT = prothrombin time
- use to check the eeffects of warfarin or check for liver disease
- PTT = partial thrombopalstin time
- checks effects of heparin
- PT and PTT = used to preop evaluation or to diagnose bleeding problems

PSA
A
- Screening test for prostate cancer in men
- Increases normally as a man’s prostate enlarges with age
- may increase in prostatits or prostate cancer
- an injury, a digital rectal exam, or sexual activity (ejaculation) may also breifly raise PSA levels
- does not raise with exercise
