Q

What is the expected oxygen saturation reading using a standard pulse oximeter in a patient with Methemoglobinemia and normal partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood

A

85%
Normal sPo2 can neither detect MetHgb nor accurately measure Spo2 in elevated methemoglobinemia.

Q

What is methemoglobinemia? What is the treatment?

A

An altered state of hemoglobin where the ferrous form of heme is oxidized to ferric form. MetHgb cannot bind to oxygen or release previously bound oxygen. Leads to a left shift on the oxy0hgb curve. Generally, partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood will remain normal.

Methylene blue 1-2ml/kg is the primary pharm treatment.
