What is a febrile convulsion?

A
  • Occur up to 6 years and a brief tonic clonic seizure accompanied by a rapid rise in temperature.
  • Usually occy in viral infection and dont lead to epilepsy.
  • Treat the cause of fever - dont give paracetamol

What is a breath holding attack?

A

Occurs in toddlers when upset. Hold breathe until lose consciousness

A

Child becomes pale and falls to floowr and may have tonic clonic seizure.

Usually a trigger eg head trauma, fright, fever, cold food.

A

Clusters of a few a day for weeks. Have lacrimation, redness,photophobia and eye swelling. INTENSE PAIN

Treat - Triptans and oxygen

Prevention - Prednisolone/Veramapril

Postural

First line tx - Weight loss, diuretic, stent if vision affected

First line investigation - MRI/LP to look at lumbar opening pressure (normal 18-25cm)

It could be central venous sinus thrombosis

Linked to tetracyclines/steroids
