clin med 3: pathology terms Flashcards
Epidemic, epizootic
Unusually high prevalence of a disease present in a region which may rapidly spread
Epidemiology
Science of dealing with various factors that determine frequencies and distribution of an infectious disease
Endemic, enzootic
Disease that occurs naturally but in small numbers within a local area
Morbidity
Ratio of the number of sick animals to total number of animals involved
Mortality
Ratio of the number of dead animals to the total number of animals involved
Nosocomial
An infection acquired during hospitalization
Pathognomonic
A characteristic of a disease that distinguishes it from other diseases
Serology
Study/detection of antibodies or antigen in the blood/serum
Virulence
Disease producing power of a microorganism
Agenesis, aplasia
Incomplete, imperfect, or complete lack of development
Hypoplasia
Underdevelopment of a tissue, organ, or limbs
Dysplasia
Abnormal development of a tissue or organ
Atrophy
Reduction in size of a previously normal sized organ
Ecchymotic hemorrhage
Moderate area of blood accumulation usually seen under the skin (a bruise)
Petechia
Tiny pin point hemorrhages
Vasculitis
Inflammation of blood or lymph vessels
Emboli
A foreign body within the blood stream
Infarct
Region of dead tissue due to a complete interference with blood flow
Infection
Invasion and multiplication of organisms in the body
Incubation
Period when disease develops by multiplication of an infectious agent within a host
Sub-clinical
When a disease is present without clinical signs
Prodromal period
Time of mild symptoms
Clinical
Signs of disease are present
Alopecia
Partial or complete loss of hair
Ascites
Abnormal accumulation of serous (watery) fluid in the abdominal cavity
Caseous
Cheese like exudate a
Emphysematous
Pertaining to an accumulation of air within tissues
Erosion, ulceration
Loss of surface tissue due to inflammation or trauma
Exudate
Discharge from the body
Fetid
Having a foul odor
Hydrothorax
Excessive collection of serous fluid in the thoracic cavity
Lipidosis
Fatty accumulation within a tissue or organ resulting in interference of function
Lesion
Alteration from normal in structure or function resulting from injury or disease
Lesion
Alteration from normal in structure or function resulting from injury or disease
Lymphadenopathy
Enlargement of the lymph nodes
Microencephaly
Having a smaller than normal brain
Mucopurulent
Creamy exudates consisting of mucus and cells
Necrotic
Refers to dead cells of tissue in contact with living cells
Polyarticular
Affecting many joints
Purulent
Pus
Septicemic
Complete systemic involvement of an infectious disease, when a microorganism and its products are throughout the bloodstream
Splenomegaly
Enlargement of the spleen
Vesicle
Superficial cavity filled with fluid elevated above the surface of the tissue or organ (blister)
Viscera
Internal organs of the trunk of the body
