Climate Change Flashcards
Eggect of climate change on environment
Changing distribution of species
Melting Ice
Changing precipitation patterns
Reduction in biodiversity-as can’t evolve to warmer climate
Sea surface temp increasing- bleaching some sensitive coral
Impacts of climate change on people
More frequent heatwaves put pressures on nhs meaning that less patients can be attended to and inventively costing the Nhs a significant amount of money
Annual cost of damage may rise from £2 billion to £12 billion
Climate change refugees may migrate to europe as too hot in own country due to droughts etc
Droughts in othe rparts of world will affect food production so prices may increase
Impacts fo climate change of landscapes
Flash floods and river flooding more likely meaning costs homeowners lots of money
Rising sea levels = coastal flooding more likely leading to land being lost
Nonnative species may spread
Warmer drier summer increase the risk of drought
Ecosystems will have to adapt or plant and animal species may die out
National scale responses to climate change
Government campaigns and legislation to reduce,
reuse and recycle
• Limit carbon emissions from industry and
agriculture
• Economic growth may not allow energy use
reduction
• As cities expand populations will consume more
energy, food and water which all leads to greater
carbon emissions
• Cooperation between international governments
is needed
Local Scale responses to climate change
• Walking or cycling to reduce fuel consumption
/emissions
• Buy local produce to reduce food miles
• Recycling to reduced consumption
• Install insulation, double glazing to reduce
heat loss therefore reduce energy use
• Install solar panels
Impacts of Climate change in the UK -
environmental
Ecosystems will have to adapt or plant and
animal species will struggle/die
• Some species may become extinct
• Some species may migrate further north
• Non-native species may spread
How will climate change affect the UK?
• Average temperatures have already
risen by 1 degree C in the last 100
years
• Summer temperatures are increasing
more than winter ones
• By 2080 middle range predictions
are;
• Temperature –
– Winter temperatures increase by 2-4 degrees
– Summer temperatures increase by 3-5 degrees
• Rainfall –
– 15-30% wetter in Winter, 15-30% drier in Summer
– Extreme rainfall will be more frequent and intense
