Classic Explanations of Crime Part 3 Flashcards
Feminism and Criminology
Feminists argued that more attention needed to be given to understanding women’s experiences as victims of crime, and to female criminals.
Part of a social movement helping to change social attitudes and CJS responses to issues like rape and domestic violence.
Male Violence Against Women in the 1980s
Prior to mid 1980s, police often did not lay charges or the perpetrator would be charged with “being drunk and disorderly in the home”.
What idea emerged as more woman were entering academia
more women in education = more deviant
Liberation/Emancipation Hypothesis
-Adler and Simon
-As girls and women gained more freedom and rights, they would become just as likely as boys and men to commit crime
What did further analysis reveal about woman committing crime
Further analysis revealed women were committing common property offences…they were not receiving the benefits of this second wave of feminism/emancipation
(ex. Passing bad cheques, shoplifting, welfare fraud)
Power Control Theory
-Hagan
- The amount of power a parent had in the workplace was related to the control displayed in the household over their teenage children.
(workplace dynamic affects home life)
-Generally - teenaged boys are freer to deviate than teenaged girls.
What are the two type of households in power control theory
Patriarchal and Egalitarian
Patriarchal Household: Delinquency rates of girls were considerably lower than those of boys. ( argument = girls don’t get the opportunity to be delinquent)
Egalitarian households: self-reported delinquency was more similar for boys and girls.
Criticisms of Power Control Theory
-Does not explain serious or repetitive delinquency.
-Implicitly blames increases in female crime on mothers who are working.
