class 6 Flashcards
what is a literature review
a summary of current empirical & theoretical knowledge about a particular problem that provides basis for the study conducted
purpose of a lit review
-identification of a research problem
-orientation to what is known and not known
-determination of gaps or inconsistencies in a body of research
-assistance with interpretation of findings
-acquiring knowledge on a topic
-evaluating current practices
-developing evidence-based clinical protocols and interventions
types of literature
-empirical or data-based research studies
-theoretical or conceptual i.e. concept analyses, theories & model, lit reviews
-gray literature i.e. anecdotal reports, opinion articles, case reports
primary source of data
written by the person(s) who conducted the study or developed theory
secondary source of data
written by someone other than the person(s) who conducted the study or developed the theory
nursing research journals
peer-reviewed or refereed articles are reviewed by experts in the field who make reccomendations to accept, reject, or revise
conducting a literature review
the process of examining an extensive number of research and theoretical sources to generate a picture of what is known & not known about a problems
the literature review in a research article should
-be current
-use primary sources
-be logically organized
-describe relevant studies
-give evidence for the design chosen
-show evidence of critical analysis by researchers
reading & critiquing research
-skimming
-comprehending
-analyzing
-synthesizing
literature review in an article
-in a research article, the literature review follows the introduction
-may have no heading, “literature review” heading, or “background” heading
3 types of replication studies
-exact (direct)
-conceptual
-systematic extension
goal of replication studies
it allows for the verification and validation of study findings
incidence of replication
-replication crisis
-lack of replication limits use of research findings in practice
-replication studies have increased in number but some issues remain
outcome of the literature review
-support/background for new study
-rationale for change in practice
-publishable article
a good lit review includes:
-introduction: indicate contant & organization
-synthesis of empircal lit
-synthesis of theoretical lit
-summary of wgat is currently known/unknown
