Class 2 - Vital Signs and Physical Assessment Flashcards
Cardiac Output
volume of blood ejected by the heart per minute - HR x SV
Waist-to-Hip Ratio
used to measure for diseases one may at be risk for
febrile
fever
pulse deficit
HR > Pulse
hypoxia
low O2 levels in the blood
routine precautions
hand hygiene, clean gloves, eye protection, donning a gown
Preload
Pressure exerted onto the ventricles as the heart begins to fill with blood
Tachycardia
fast heartbeat, >100BPM
Manual BP Unit
2 mmhg - BP cuff
Cyanosis
blue tinge to skin
Bradypnea
shallow breathing
Murmur
turbulent flow of blood across the heart valves
Afterload
pressure needed
Bradycardia
low heart beat, <60 BPM
Hyperthermia
high temperature
Droplet Precautions
sneezing, coughing
Hypercapnia
too much CO2 in the bloodstream
Homeostasis
maintaining a relatively stable internal environment despite changes to the external environment
pyrexia
fever
non-invasive blood pressure
blood pressure outside the body
Automated Blood Pressure
automatically does it through a machine - 1mmhg
Crackles (fine, coarse)
high-pitched fine, short, interrupted crackling sounds heard during the end of inspiration, not cleared with coughing
Dyspnea
shortness of breath
Allostasis
adapting to the internal and external changes that occur to our body
Invasive Blood Pressure
inside the body - requires a monitor
Auscultatory Gap
abnormal, could be a sign of hypertension - is when there is no “sound” after the first korotkoff sound
Air Hunger
sensation of not having enough oxygen - gasping
Vesicular Breath Sounds
soft, quiet sound - heard in the lungs
Wheezes
high-pitched, continuous musical sounds
Rhonci
loud, low-pitched rumbling coarse sounds heard during inspiration or expiration
Stridor Rubs
grating sound heard during inspiration or expiration
Airborne Precautions
wear a mask, eye protection, gloves, proper hand washing
Hemodynamics
perfusion of oxygen in the body - determined by HR, BP, and gas-exchange
Pulse
reflects systole, contractility, and stroke volume
Mean Arterial Pressure
pressure regulated by the body - average BP through the cardiac cycle
Short of Breath
dyspnea
S1
LUB; mitral and tricuspid valves closing
S2
DUB; aortic and pulmonary valves closing
S3
rapid ventricular filling
S4
atria contract to enhance ventricular filling
Crackles (Coarse)
loud, bubbly sounds heard during inspiration, not cleared with coughing
