Class 2/16 Flashcards
Methods of testing explicit memory
Recall and recognition
Explicit (declarative) memory
Memory of facts and experiences that one cab consciously know and declare.
Episodic- zero in and pull it out (dinner)
Semantic- knowledge of facts and info
Implicit (nondeclaration) memory
Memory without conscious reflection.
- body has learned what to do.
Method of testing implicit
Don’t test on exams
Evidence for dissociation/ separable memory system
Henry M. Amnisia could learn implicit Anterograde-forget events after damag Retrograde- forgot events before Alzhiemers patients lost epicotic memory first
Repressed memory
Tramatic events should become flashbulb memories
Difference between group one and two
Thought the event was traumatic (2), recovered memory in therapy (2), had remembered before but then forgot again (1), had better suppression (2),
Effortful processing
Encoding that requires attention and conscious effort
Automatic processing
Unconscious encoding of incidental information, such as space, time, frequency, and well- learbing information, such as word meaning
Iconic memory
A monentary sensort memory of visual stimuli; a photographic or picture-image memory lasting no more than a few tenths of a second
Echoic memory
A momentary sensory memory of auditory stimuli; if attention is elsewhere, sounds and words can still be reacled ehithin 3 to 4 seconds
Mnemonics
Me ory aids especially those techniques that use vivid imagery and organizational devices
Spacing effect
The tnedency for distributing study or practice to yield better long- term retention than is achieved through massed study or practice
