what is development?
the western concept regarding how the West sees other countries in terms of state building, economics, social development of the civil society, etc.
what is the problem with the definition if development?
it’s a main economic term that has been used for the past 50 years for 3rd world countries
what are two problematic dichotomies?
a) geographically: north and south separated by equator ex)Australia doesn’t fit the global south
b) western vs. non-western thought ex) indigenous people with the age to marry difference
what is the difference between colonization and assimilation?
colonization is to take the property of a country and assimilation is in resonance with culture ex) Spain and Mexico (set up of strict rules and concepts)

what are the exceptions to the washington consensus?
- South Korea and Saudia Arabia as successes in cases of development
- Chile, Panama and Mexico ambiguous at best
- China: extremely totalatarian success in economy but rule of law and liberties are debatable (not part of the Madrid covenant)

what is the first common trait?
economic development
a) productivity (based on monetary or value of 1 unit)
b) infrastructures (4 basic sectors: comm, energy, transport, water)
c) primary sector
d) large informal sector (regarding property, counter fit, can affect productivity by reducing the measurable info)
how many percent of the population lives in LDCs
80%, 10% live in extreme poverty and about 40% lives with 3.5$ US a day
what is the second common trait?
social characteristics: how societies measure the satisfaction of the own needs

what is the third common trait?
political charcateristics: more authoritorian and less democratic regimes (north korea or Iran) but South Africa is extremely democratic and Uruguay is extremely civilized , former colonies, political instability, etc.
