What was the NAACP?
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was committed to fighting for civil rights in the courts in order to bring an end to segregation.
When was the NAACP set up?
The NAACP was set up in February 1909.
Why was the NAACP created?
❖To end the discrimination and violence faced by African Americans.
❖To end lynchings of African Americans.
What events was the NAACP involved in?
❖It was involved in challenging segregation in education in the Brown versus Topeka case in 1954.
❖It helped protect the witnesses in the Emmett Till case in 1955.
❖It was one of the organisers of the March on Washington in 1963.

What was CORE?
The Congress of Racial Equality was a non-violent organisation from the north. It used peaceful methods to spread its message and trained others to do so, for example by using boycotts and sit-ins to protest against segregation.
When was CORE set up?
CORE was set up in 1942.
