AMID THE storming of the Capitol…
à la suite de l’invasion
…, not to mention Parler, a far-right leaning social network which was forced offline.
.
THAT Trump’s call FOR disrupting what was a democratic process posed a threat TO democracy cannot be GAINSAID.
.
However is it the role of Silicon Valley SOCIAL MEDIA to decide whether or not TO SILENCE those opposing the result of the election ?
.
After all they obeyed an incitement which remained in the legal framework of the right to free speech, which is not the case of some death threats TO BE FOUND online. Why should social networks BE ALLOWED to have DOUBLE STANDARDS ?
.
Are the tech OLIGOPOLIES’ EXECUTIVES better judges ? Should they guarantee democracy and free speech ?
.
Managing free speech online is indeed a challenge but tech companies are too big and too few to act as ALMIGHTY (tt-puissant) bodies and they need REGULATION NOT TO endanger our fundamental liberties.
.
Biden advocates and embodies the very principles Trump has kept FLOUTING (to flout: bafouer, mépriser), from the respect of the rule of law, to institutional independence, to the freedom of press.
.
Biden might restore the western world to its former role AS A MORAL BEACON, which Trump’s PROPENSITY (propension = tendance = inclination) TO lyING and bullying has GREATLY undermined.
.
Biden’s chief foreign policy adviser Antony Blinken actually declared that the Biden administration would ENDEAVOUR (s’efforcerait) to reverse the trend imposed by Trump’s disengagement policy and that US leadership would return.
.
However Biden, like B.Obama before him, MIGHT ?? BE more inclined to TURN TO Germany or France when dealing with Europe rather than TO Britain. Actually the relationship binding the two countries has not been so special lately and if Biden is more likely to take us back to a more multilateral world we cannot say for certain that the ties uniting the US to the UK will be strengthened FOR ALL THAT (pour autant).
.
The special relationship uniting Great Britain with America RELIES UPON (se fonde sur) the Anglo-Protestant legacy. Indeed not only does the American law and constitution STEM from the English COMMON LAW, but that the original settlers from Britain did shape the American identity remains unquestionable.
