what does gendered talk entail?
it can show the place and perception of women and men in society
what can gendered differences in language reflect?
it shows that gendered differences often stem from the difference model rather than the dominance model
difference model = cultures of conversation
dominance model = differences in power
what types of languages do men and women have
women often use language to maintain relationships (rapport style) and men use it to communicate factual information (report style)
what is direct indexing?
when a linguistic feature indexes something to have a social meaning that is exclusive (brother = male, sister = female)
what is indirect indexing?
when a linguistic feature gets a social meaning because of an expectation or social norm
what is the gender paradox?
the principles of language changing over time (see Cht. 5 time)
what is gender policing?
when people are encouraged to aim for gender ideals or are sanctioned when they don’t
