what is an ethnolect?
an ethnic variety of a language or dialect (AAE for example), such as sibboleths
what is ethnic hypercorrection?
when people try to not sound like they are from a certain community
what makes the use of an ethnolect greater?
when people live in an ethnic enclave
what is an ethnic enclave?
a place where people with a certain ethnic background reside and have little to no contact with people from different backgrounds
what is code-switching?
when people alternate between 2 or more languages/varieties in a single conversation (common for bi-/multi-lingual people)
what is asymetrical bilingualism?
when a less powerful linguistic group has to adept to the more powerful group to access facilities
what is diglossia?
a situation where two distinct varieties of a language co-exist in a community (like a social register) the high variety is used in formal settings and the low variety is used in informal settings
what are enthonyms?
a preffered name for an ethnic group, can change over time
what is crossing?
when you use another group’s ethnolect
