Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Flashcards
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
CTE is a progressive and fatal brain disease associated with repeated head injuries (such as concussions)
What causes Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
Repeated blows trigger an abnormal build up of a protein called tau in the brain which leads to the death of brain cells
Diagnosing CTE
Definitive diagnosis can only be made after death in a post-mortem examination
How can you prevent Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
No cure for CTE
Avoiding repeated head injuries is the best way to prevent CTE
Helmets do not stop concussion
CTE research
Emerging area of study
Still trying to determine how many people CTE affects
The Australian Sports Brain Bank was founded in 2018
