4C The cerebral cortex Flashcards
The cerebral cortex
The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of grey matterthat lies on top of your cerebrum
Part of the forebrain
Frontal lobe
Largest lobe
Divided into
Prefrontal cortex
Premotor cortex
Primary motor cortex
Broca’s area
Pre frontal cortex
Association area
Involved in thoughts, feelings, behavioursas well as motor movement
Premotor cortex
Motor area
Receives information about planned motor movements from prefrontal cortex and uses this to make a sequence of movements
Primary motor cortex
Motor area
Receives information from premotor cortex on sequence of movements and sends this to the cerebellum to send to the muscles involved
Broca’s area
Association area
Involved in coordinating muscle movements related to the production of speech
Only located in the cerebral hemisphere
Parietal lobe
Behind the frontal lobe
Receives and processes sensory stimuli
Contains:
Primary somatosensory cortex
Primary somatosensory cortex
Sensory area
Involved in receiving and processing touch,
The amount of cortex devoted to a body part indicates the relative sensitivity and use of that body part
Occipital lobe
Rearmost lobe in the cerebral cortex
Selects, organizes and then integrates visual information with other parts of the brain
Primary visual cortex
Visual information from the retina is sent to the primary visual cortex via the optic nerve to be processed
Temporal lobe
Lowest lobe in the cerebral cortex
Involved in memory and object recognition
Primary auditory cortex
Receives and processes auditory information
Wernicke’s area
Involved in the comprehension of speech as well as the production of coherent and meaningful speech
