Acquired Brain Injuries
An ABI is a brain injury that occurred after birth
Each person can be affected by ABI in very different ways
Can be specific or generalised effects, temporary or permanent
Traumatic
Brain damage caused by an external force
e.g Sports injuries
Non-Traumatic
Brain damage caused by internal factors
e.g. Stroke, Hypoxia (lack of oxygen)
Biological Functioning
Changes to the function of organs and neurons, observed through:
Behaviour
Organ function
Cellular and neuronal function
Psychological Functioning
Changes to thoughts,behaviours and feelings, observed by:
Behaviour
Cognition
Emotion
Social Functioning
Changes to someone’s interactions with other people, observed through:
Relationships
Interpersonal skills
