4B Brain Regions Flashcards
What are the three brain regions
Forebrain, Hindbrain, Midbrain
Hindbrain
Located towards the lower back part of the brain
Made up of
-Cerebellum
-Medulla oblongata
-Pons
Function: Involved in vital bodily processes e.g breathing and sleep
Cerebellum
Coordinates voluntary movements, balance, posture and movements associated with speech and vision
Medulla
Control centre for many autonomic functions, e.g., breathing, heart rate, salivating, blood pressure, swallowing, vomiting andsneezing
Pons
Involved in sleep, facial expressions and hearing
Midbrain
The centre of the brain
Part of the brain stem
Connects upper and lower parts of the brain
Involved in sensory processing and motor control
Made up of the:
Reticular formation
Reticular Formation
Regulates sleep, wakefulness and arousal. Directs information travelling through the brain to various areas of the brain
Forebrain
Largest region of the brain
Made up of the:
Cerebrum
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Involved in sophisticated mental processes e.g learning, memory, thinking and perception
Hypothalamus
Maintainsoptimal biological functioningbyregulating internalprocesses e.g. hunger, thirst, body temperature, hormonelevels
Thalamus
Relay centre for sensory information, involved in attention
