A
Uncontrolled clonal prolifération of myeloid cells

What is peak age
A
40-60yrs

What is the mutation involved
A
philadelphia chromosome
reciprocal translocation between long arm of chromosome 9 and long am of chromosome 22 - t(9;22)

How does it present?
A
Chronic and insidiously:
- WL, tiredness, fever, sweats (anaemia)
- Extensive cell turnover - increased uric acid production 3. Splenomegaly (usually massive)- abdomen discomfort
- Bleeding - thrombocytopenia

What investigations would u do and what would u find
A
- FBC - elevated WBC, anaemia,
- Metabolic profile - uric acid elevation
- BM biopsy - granulocytic hyperplasia
- Cytogenetic - confirm diagnosis - Philadelphia chromosome +ve

What is the treatment?
A
IMATINIB - BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor
Allogenic bone marrow transplant - only cure
