Chromosomes, Genes, Alleles and Traits Flashcards
1
Q
what is a gene
A
a sequence of DNA that codes for a protein
2
Q
what are genes
A
- basic units of heredity
- some genes control other genes
3
Q
what are alleles
A
- different versions of the same gene
example: the eye colour gene has a protein that gives one person blue eyes but has a different protein that gives another person brown eyes
4
Q
what do alleles do
A
- code for different versions of the same protein which can affect the body differently
5
Q
what is a homozygous
A
someone who has two of the same alleles
6
Q
what is heterozygous
A
someone who has two different forms of an allele
7
Q
how do genes control characteristics that the offspring will have
A
- a certain sequence of bases will produce one type of protein while another sequence will produce another type
8
Q
what do proteins affect
A
- each protein has an affect on the function of a cell
- the function manifests as traits
9
Q
how do genes produce proteins
A
- all cells have a nucleus
- all nuclei have DNA
- look at the DNA and make an mRNA copy of it
- then use the mRNA to make a template to make new proteins
10
Q
what does DNA do before proteins are made
A
- DNA makes a copy of itself
- instead of making a complementary DNA strand it makes a complementary RNA strand
11
Q
what is the complementary RNA strand called
A
- mRNA
- messenger RNA
