Biodiversity - Archaea Flashcards
what do Archaea have
nucleoid region but lack organelles
Archaea are called
anaerobic organisms since they don’t require oxygen to live
how do Archaea obtain energy
do not perform photosynthesis. get energy from inorganic molecules or the sun
3 types of archaea
methanogens, halophiles, thermoacidophiles
methanogens
methane producing, live in oxygen free environments
Where are methanogens found?
marshes, sewage treatment plants, and in intestines of grass eating animals like cows
halophiles
“salt-loving” archaea that live in environments that have very high salt concentrations. Example the dead sea which has 35% salt compared to an ocean with 3.5%
thermoacidophiles
Live in extremely acidic and high temperature environments. example hot sulfur springs, volcanoes, deep sea vents and mine drainage lakes
