Biodiversity - Protista Flashcards
Protist characteristics
eukaryotes, live in moist environments, mostly aerobic and single celled
the 3 major groups based on nutritional needs
- Animal-like, the protozoa
- Plant-like, the algae or protophyta
- Fungus- like, the moulds
Protozoans characteristics
heterotrophs, unicellular
Protozoans classified based on…
how they move and where they live
4 types of classifications for protozoans
flagellates(zooflagellates), Pseudopods (sarcodines), Cilates, Sporozoans (mainly parasites)
where do flagellates live
free-living in fresh water or marine habitats
where do Pseudopods live and do they have a cell wall
most are free living; no
How do Pseudopods move
Move using plasma extensions called pseudopods
how do Pseudopods eat and reproduce
engulf bits by flowing around and over food particles, reproduce by binary fission
where do Ciliates live
in fresh and marine habitats
how do Ciliates move and reproduce
by beating tiny hairs called cilia; reproduce by binary fission but can also sexually reproduce by conjugation
Sporozoans characteristics
non-motile (don’t move on their own), live in a host to survive
Plant-like: Algae characteristics
Autotrophic (photosynthetic); unicellular, multicellular or live in colonies
4 main groups of algae
- algae
- euglena
- diatoms
- dinoflagellates
Algae characteristics
unicellular or multicellular; photosynthetic; have chlorophyll; either red, green, or brown; have no roots, stems or leaves
