what is the sacred text of Christianity?
The Bible
what does the Christian Bible consist of?
- the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament)
- The Christian Scriptures (New Testament)
- the Deuterocanonical Books (additional materials contained in Orthodox and Catholic bibles)
why is the bible a sacred text of christianity?
The Bible is a sacred text for Christians believed to have been inspired by God and a record of key events in the story of humanity’s interaction with God.
what is the significance of the bible?
For Protestant communities it is the primary source of teachings. For other expressions of
Christianity is only one source of teaching.
Christians believe that the Bible is inspired by God and thus carries the authority of God, whilst displaying the relationship between God and humanity.
what is the role of the bible in every day life?
- Basic rituals and sacraments, - Prayer/Refection
- Domestic rituals e.g. grace before meals
how does the bible affect the lives of adherents?
- Aids in the physical practice, enactment and celebration of Christianity in life. Bible guides Christians in rituals and procedures in order to practice their faith.
- E.g. Jesus prays at decisive
moments in his life- “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” (Lk 6:12).
does the bible develop ethical guidelines?
- yes!
- Helps develop guidelines on how to act in certain situations, how to make decisions and promotes
questioning of moral boundaries and therefore a better understanding of self, goals etc.
what is an example of how the bible communicates ethical teachings?
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Mt 5:44)
what does the bible explore?
- the nature of god
- the ministry and life of Christ - parables
- it is a key source of revelation - basis of understanding of the Christian faith- explains and teaches beliefs.
What is an example of how the bible provides revelations?
E.g. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling amongst us” (John 1:14).
what is the importance of the bible?
- Many Christians consider the Bible to be “inspired’’ by God (2 Timothy 3:16) and is thus often referred to as
‘the Word of God’ - Demonstrates to believers that he was not only a religious revolutionary, which included political dimensions, but also the incarnation of God on Earth
- Christian beliefs are introduced in the bible
- Christians use the bible in their own spiritual development, for their devotional lives and their understanding
of God. - Also has a role in guiding Christian behaviour
- Used in the practices of Christians such as personal prayer and liturgical worship
