Chpt. 8.2 Types of Movements Flashcards
Flexion
Bending parts at a joint so that the angle decreases and parts come closer together
ex: bending the knee, moving arm closer to show off these guns
Extension
Moving parts at a joint so that angle between them increases and parts move farther apart
ex: straightening the knee, extending the arm
Dorsiflexion
Bringing foot closer to shin
ex: rocking back on one’s heels
Plantar flexion
Bringing foot farther away from shin
ex: tippy toes
Abduction
Moving a part away from the midline or from axial line of limb
ex: lifting arm horizontally to form a right angle with side of the body, spreading fingers or toes
Adduction
Moving a part toward the midline or toward the axial line of limb
ex: returning the upper limb from horizontal position to the side of the body, moving fingers or toes closer together
Rotation
Moving a part around an axis
ex: twisting head from side to side, turning limb on longitudinal axis so its anterior surface moves towards midline (medial rotation), turning limb on its longitudinal axis in opposite direction (lateral rotation)
Circumduction
Moving a part so that its end follows a circular path
ex: moving the finger in a circular motion w/o moving the hand
Supination
Rotation of the forearm so that the palm is upward
Pronation
Rotation of the forearm so that the palm is downward
Eversion
Turning the foot so the plantar surface faces laterally
Inversion
Turning the foot so the plantar surface faces medially
