Acedia
A less common synonym for sloth, one of seven capital sins
Divination
Sin against the virtue of religion in which one attempts to tell of future events by means of occult forces- Satan, demons, spirits, astrology, etc.
Incredulity
The willful resfusal to assent to revealed truth or even the neglect of this truth
Religion
A set of beliefs and practices followed by those committed to the service and worship of God
Simony
The buying or selling of spiritual things, which have God alone as their owner and master
Superstition
Sin against the virtue of religion involving the attribution of a kind of magical power to certain practices or objects, like charms or omens
Blasphemy
Speech, thought, or action involving contempt for God or the Church, or persons or things dedicated to God
Oath
Invocation of God’s name to bear witness to the truth
Perjury
Giving ones word under oath falsely, or making a promise under oath without intending to keep it
Reverence
Deep respect felt or shown towards a person on account of his or her position or relationship
Vow
A deliberate and free promise made to God concerning a possible and better good which must be fulfilled by reason of the virtue of religion
Leisure
Time to cultivate one’s familial, cultural, social, and religious life
Mass
Eucharistic or principal sacramental celebration of the Church, established by Jesus at the Last Supper, in which the mystery of our salvation through participation in the sacrificial death and glorious resurrection of Christ is renewed and accomplished
Resurrection
(Italics) Of the dead (Italics): raising pf the righteous, who will forever with the risen Christ, on the last day. (Italics) Of Christ (Italics): The bodily rising of Jesus from the dead on the third day after His deathon the cross and burial in the tomb
Sabbath
The Sabbath or seventh day, on which God rested after work of the six days of creation was completed, as recounted in opening nature of the Bible
The 1st Commandment
“I am the Lord your God; you shall have no other gods before Me.”
The 2nd Commandment
“You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain.”
The 3rd Commandment
Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy
Reason for the Theological Virtures (3x)
~ God gives us virtues to help us live out the 1st Commandment to love Him and put Him foremost in our lives
~ Christians receive these in Baptism
~ “THEOlogical” because they come from God, and practice of these leads us to God
Faith
Personal adherence to the whole Truth of God
Sins against Faith (3x):
~ Receiving “communion” at non-Catholic Christians services and/or REPLACING Mass with a non-Catholic Christian service
~ Voluntary doubt (subbornly resfusing to belief or adhere to Truth) (you have doubts, but don’t correct them)
~ Incredulity
- Heresy
- Apostasy (Switching faith)
- Schism (Great division in Christians)
Hope
Desire for and expection of God’s eternal life and the graces needed to gain it
Sins against Hope:
~ Despair (I’m done with this!) (Not depression!! Depression leads to despair which leads to suicide)
~ Presumption
Charity (Love)
Willing the good of another; loving God above all else of His own sake, and neighbor as self
Sins against Charity (5x):
~ Indifference (Selfishness) ~ Acedia (Spiritual Sloth) ~ Lukewarmness (Not 'All in!') ~ Hatred of God (Blame God) ~ Ingratitude (Not being thankful for what you already have)

Belief, worship, and service of God
Sins against the Virtue of Religion (7x)
~ Idolatry (Priorities! Don't make that priority an idol if it's not God) ~ Superstition ~ Divination (widgie boards) ~ Magic (Vodoo) ~ Irreligion (testing God; Sacrilegous) ~ Simony (Indulgences) ~ Atheism
Why there’s a 2nd Commandment
~ God’s Name is HOLY- it deserves respect (disrespect for His Name is disrespect for God)
- I Am Who Am: “Yahweh” -> YHWH, Adonai, Elohim, G-d
~ Respect for God’s Name extends to those He loves: His Mother and the other Saints
God’s Name and Oaths
~ Oaths should only be sworn for serious reasons
- “I swear to God” can be a misuse of God’s Name
- If it’s a falsely sworn oath, it’s a mortal sin
Oath
~ A statement that the swearer is telling the truth, and God is his witness
Requirements for an Oath (4x)
~ God as a witness
~ Spoken aloud
~ Intends and knows he is swearing an oath
~ Must be TRUE, NECESSARY, and for a GOOD PURPOSE
God’s Name and Vows
~ Vows in the Church: religious life (put in place by Church) and marriage vows (put in place by God)
Vow
Deliberate and free promise made to God for a greater good to come about through the swearer
Requirements for a Vow (4x)
~ A serious promise of something better
~ Public
~ Deliberate and free
~ Made for God
Worship and Rest
~ God rested after His labors
~ He set aside one day a week for His people to have mandatory rest for RELIGIOUS and PRACTICAL reasons
Worship
~ God provides us with so many gifts- He deserves to be THANKED
~ We are members of a community- the community as a whole world should gather to give thanks
Rest
~ We NEED a day to recuperate
~ Work on Sundays is prohibited UNLESS the work to be done

~ Must be done to honor God
~ Must be done to help a neighbor
~ Is absolutely necessary to sustain livelihood
