Chpt 1 Flashcards
Physical properties
determined w/o changing the identity of the substance
ExL color, odor, shape, appearance, density, melting/boiling temp, solubility, index of refraction
Chemical Properties
determined by the chem changes the substances can undergo. Ex: fire, erosion etc
Intensive properties
those that dont depend on the amount of matter being examined
Extensive
Depend on amount amnt of matter in the sample being examined Ex: mass, volume
Pure Substance
has same intensive properties throughout AND cant be seperated into two or more other substances except by means of chem reaction
Element
pure substance that cant be decomposed by ordinary chem methods into simpler substances
Compund
two or more elements chem. combined in a definite weight ratio
mixtures
comosed of two or more substances (elements or compunds) but not in any particular fixed weight ratio
heterogenous mixture
not uniform in its composition and one can see individual particles within it with the naked eye. Sand, wood, oil soil are examples
homogenous mixture
uniform composition individual particles cant be seen with naked eye
physical methods of separation
dont change the indentity of the substance during a procedure
chemical methods of separation
change the identity of the substance during a procedure
whats the 6 common methods to separate the components of a mixture
filtration, distilation, solubiity, extraction, fractional crystalization, decanation, evaporation
Filtration
used to sepaate insoluble solids form a liquid
distillation
used to separate volatile substances equally from non volitile sustances
