Chp 40 Endocrine Disorder Flashcards
Name 3 thyroid hormone (4)
- Levothyroxine
- Thyroid
- Liothyronine
- Liotrix
What’s the pharmacological action of thyroid hormones?
They’re synthetic forms of the thyroid hormone. They increase the metabolic rate, protein synthesis, CO, renal perfusion, O2 use, body temp ,blood volume
What are two antithyroid medications?
- Proplthiouracil
2. Methimazole
What are two therapeutic uses of radioactive iodine?
It’s used to treat hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer.
What is the pharmacological action of radioactive iodine?
It’s absorbed by the thyroid and destroys some of the thyroid producing cells.
What is the pharmacological action of strong iodine solution?
It creates high levels of iodine, and reduces iodine uptake by the thyroid gland, and inhibits thyroid hormone production.
Name a growth hormone
Somatropin
Expected pharmacological action of somatropin?
It stim overall growth and protein production, and decrease the use of glucose.
Name two antidiuretic hormones
-pressin
vasopressin, desmopressin
What’s the action of antidiuretic hormone?
- promotes re-absorption of water within the kidney
- vasoconstriction because of vascular smooth muscle contraction.
What are two adverse effects of ADH?
- Re absorption of too much water
- MI from excessive vasoconstriction
Name 2 adrenal hormone replacements
- hydrocortisone
- prednisone, dexamethasone
- Mineral corticoids: fludrocortisone
What are 2 therapeutic uses of adrenal hormone replacement?
- Replacement therapy for adrenocortical insufficiency (Addison’s disease)
- Nonendocrine disorders
