How does antidiarrheals, diphenoxylate,work?
activates opioid receptors to decrease intestinal motility
What are possible complications of diphenoxylate?
at recommended doses, it doesn’t affect the CNS.
at high levels, pt may experience opioid effects, such as euphoria or CNS depression
What is a med for IBS with diarrhea?
alosetron
Increases firmness in stool and decrease in urgency and frequency of defecation
What is a med for IBS with constipation?
lubiprostone
increases fluid secretion in the intestine to promote intestinal motility. Treats IBs with constipation
