Chp 3 Flashcards
What does C I A stand for and what are their individual goals
Crime identification association
C- establish whether or not a crime has been committed
I- identify suspects in the crime
A-associate victims, suspects, and the crime the scene
These cases are were offenders are still at scene or very nearby the crime scene
Hot cases
Offenders have let the crime scene and victims may or may not be present but the scene still contains fresh or smoking gun evidence
Warm cases
Main clued eyewitness accounts and physical evidence
Smoking gun evidence
Been reported or detected sometime after it occurred usually one year or more or been investigated for at least a year with no suspects
Cold case
In table 3.1 what is the least likely and most likely reason to not report a crime
Least likely protect the offender
Most likely for personal/private matter
In table 3.1 what is the most likely reason for people not reporting and the least likely reason for people not reporting violent crimes
Most likely reason is to prevent future violations
Least likely for them to report to catch the offender
What is ROI stand for and what is it?
Report of investigation and it is submitted to prosecutors who will decide whether the strength of the case merits an attempt to officially charged suspect with investigative crime
Evidence that is easily perishable or destroyed
Transient evidence
A rough sketch outlining key areas of the crime scene
Logistics map
The peripheral crime scene is also known as this
Inner area
Peripheral crime scene has what type of items In it
Shell casings footprints fingerprints or other evidence to potty before and after the crime was committed entry and exit paths
What is found or what is the outer and extended area used for
To locate possible evidence that has not been previously discovered and to keep media and other onlookers away from the activity
Is helpful in a sequence of events occurring if there are one or two crime scenes
Macroscopic scene
Specific evidence found within a particular crimes and location such as cartridge casing window glass or bloodstain found on the pavement where one of the drive-by shootings occurred
Micro scopic scene
What are some steps relating to media relations at the crime scene five steps
One provide information about the radio call
Two unless doing so would adversely affect investigation release information about arrestees
three release basic facts of the rest
four don’t release information about
five in general
Photographs taken from the side of the object
Oblique lighting
Sketches that are created in a Birdseye across projection or exploded also known as
Elevated perspective
Gently used method to show bullet holes or blood stains on the walls or eight or any other vertically oriented service
Elevated perspective
Commonly used by investigators. The method requires the identification of two fixed, adjacent points within the crime scene to create a horizontal and vertical axis, or rectangular area.
Measurement taken from both horizontal and vertical angles to the center mass
Rectangular coordinates
Used in rectangular coordinate methods normally outdoor crime scenes they form a 4 quadrant grid
Grid system
Most precise and flexible method used
Secondary reference point coordinates
Triangulation
The purpose is to illustrate the locations of all evidence contained on both horizontal and vertical surfaces
Cross projection or exploded sketch
Establishing a straight line or baseline between to fix points
Baseline coordinates
Not used very often but is helpful for taking measures in large outdoor crime scenes that contain few fix point of reference
Polar coordinates
Used indoor and outdoor measures distance is and elevations with the device known as EDM
Total station approach
What does EDM stand for
Electronic distance meter
Main objective of locating all evidence that will associate the suspect to the crime committed at the crime scene
Associative evidence
A fixed point which from all measures are taken
Datum point
Consists of two or more methods of search
Hybrid search
Divided into a series of liens or stripes across the search area
Line or stripe search
Double stripe technique search Goodwin looking for small pieces of evidence
Grid search
Outward and inward spiral( known to be the best used by investigators)
Spiral search
Searches conducted a long paths most likely to contain evidence
Link search
Zones can be carried out indoors or outdoors and can be easily combine with other search methods
Zone search
