CHP. 2 - Sources of Info Flashcards
Unreliable sources of info
- Intuition
- Experience
- Authority
Experience vs. Empirical Research
- Has no comparison groups
- Confounded by too many variables
- Difficult to isolate variables
Intuition vs. Empirical Research
Subject to bias
Availability Heuristic
Bias that results from what comes to mind easily or most quickly
Present/Present Bias
We often ignore the absence of something
- we fail to think about what we can’t see
Confirmation Bias
Bias is which preconceived notions leads to “cherry picking”
- we focus on info that agrees with our beliefs
Bias Blind Spot
We are biased about being biased
- we think we’re not biased but we don’t know what we’er biased about
Authority vs. Empirical Research
Just because someone has an advanced degree doesn’t mean they can automatically be trusted
