CHP. 14 - Replicability & Generalization Flashcards
Conceptual Replication
Replication utilizing a different operationalization of either the IV or DV
Direct Replication
Original/different lab repeats original study as closely as possible
Replication + Extension
Direct or conceptual replication followed with additional experiments designed to expand internal or external validity
HARKing
When researchers change their hypothesis after a surprising finding
P-hacking
When researchers add subjects, remove outliers, or run a different stat analysis
File Drawer Problem
Significant relationships are much more likely to be published than null effects
Preregistration
Scientists preregister their studies method, hypothesis, & stat analysis prior to collecting data
Open Science
Practice of sharing data freely so others can collaborate
Ecological Validity
Do lab settings generalize to the real world?
Theory Testing Mode
Testing an association/causal claim
- priority is internal validity
- depends on researcher’s priorities
Generalization Mode
Focus on generalizing to larger population
- priority is external validity
- frequency claims
WEIRD
Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic
- 96% of samples are WEIRD
