CHP. 12 - Multiple IVs Flashcards
Interaction Effect
Effect if 1 IV depends on the level of another IV
2 types:
- Crossover
- Spreading
Crossover Interaction
opposite differences
- “X” shape
Spreading Interaction
no difference to a difference
- “<” shape
Factorial Designs
Used to test interactions
- 2 or more IVs are crossed
Main Effect
Overall (avg) effect of 1 IV on the DV when averaging over the levels of the other IVs
Marginal Means
Means for each level of IV averaging over levels of the other IV
Main Effects vs. Interaction Effects
Examine differences in marginal means vs. examine differences in differences
Independent-Groups Factorial Design
Separate groups for all levels of all IVs
- Both IVs are studied as independent groups (ex. 2x2 = 4 groups)
Within-Groups Factorial Design
Expose all subjects to all levels of all IVs
- Both IVs manipulated within groups (ex. 2x2 = 1 group that is present w/all 4 conditions)
Mixed Factorial Design
1 variable manipulated as independent groups while other is manipulated within groups
3-Way Design
2x2x2
