Indications of mild choking are?
Are you chocking? Answers yes.
Can speak, cough, breathe.
Indications of severe choking are?
Unable to answer “are you choking?” Might nod instead.
Attempts at coughing are silent.
Unable to breathe or breathing wheezy.
Might be unconscious.
If abdominal thrusts are use what precaution must be taken?
Assessed in hospital for abdominal damage.
What is the course of action for mild FBAO?
Encourage to cough, monitor carefully, rapid transport to hospital.
What is done for conscious adult patient with severe FBAO?
Five back blows followed if necessary by 5 abdominal thrusts.
General signs of chocking?
Witnessed eating.
Clutching neck.
What is done for unconscious FBAO patients?
CPR
If unsuccessful, visualise vocal cords with laryngoscope, remove any visible object with forceps or suction.
If that fails perform needle cricothyroidotomy.
Following successful FBAO treatment what should be done for patients with persistent cough, difficulty swallowing or sensation of something stuck in their throat.
