What are the symptoms for an adrenal crisis?

A

The primary manifestation of adrenal crisis is shock. Other signs and symptoms include weakness, lethargy, confusion, LOC, low BP, elevated temp, severe pain in lower back, legs or abdomen and severe V&D leading to dehydration (Caroline, 2013).

What is the prehospital treatment for an adrenal crisis?

A

Maintaining ABC until arrival at the ED. If becomes unconscious, maintain airway be alert for vomiting and have suction ready. IV hydrocortisone followed by administration of saline fluid. IV Dextrose if hypoglycaemic. Heart monitoring to watch for cardiac arrhythmias due to hyperkalemia (Caroline, 2013).

What is Addison’s disease?

A

Addison’s disease (primary adrenal insufficiency) is caused by the atrophy or destruction of the adrenal glands which leads to a decreased functioning of the adrenal cortex with an underproduction of cortisol and aldosterone (Caroline, 2013).

A

The most common causes of death is hypotension and cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia (Caroline, 2013)
