What are the choice/reality philosophies?
A
- Based on choice theory, assume we need quality relationships to be happy
- Choice theory explains human nature & how to best achieve satisfying interpersonal relationships

- Focus on what clients are doing & how to get them to evaluate whether present actions are working for them
- Rejects medical model: transference, the unconscious & dwelling on one’s past

- Help ppl become more effective in meeting all psychological needs
- Enable clients to reconnect w/ ppl they chose to put into quality worlds & teach clients choice theory

A
- Fundamental task: create good relationship w/ client
- Engage clients in evaluation of all relationships w/ respect to what they want & how effective they are in getting this
- Find out what clients want, ask what they are choosing to do, invite them to evaluate present behaviour & help make plans for change

A
- Active, directive & didactic therapy
- Skillful questioning: central technique
- Various techniques to get clients to evaluate what they are presently doing to see if willing to change
- If clients decide that present behaviour is not effective, develop specific plan for change & make commitment to follow through
