  • Based on principles of learning theory
  • Normal behaviour learned thru reinforcement & imitation
  • Abnormal behaviour is result of faulty learning

  • Eliminate maladaptive behaviours & learn effective behaviours
  • Identify factors that influence behaviour & find out what can be done about problematic behaviour
  • Encourage clients to take active & collaborative role in setting treatment goals and evaluating how well goals are met

What is the Behaviour therapeutic relationship like?

  • Therapist is active & directive and functions as teacher/mentor to help clients learn effective behaviour
  • Clients must be active in process & experiment w/ new behaviours
  • Quality relationship not sufficient to bring change, but essential for implementing behavioural procedures
