- Cognitions determine how we feel & act
- Oriented toward cognition & behaviour, stresses role of thinking, deciding, questioning, doing & redeciding
- Psychoeducational model: emphasise therapy as learning process & acquiring effective ways of coping w/ problems

- Psychological problems rooted in childhood, but reinforced by present ways of thinking
- Belief system & thinking causes disorders
- Internal dialogue affects behaviour
- Examine faulty assumptions & misconceptions and replace w/ effective beliefs

- Teach clients to confront faulty beliefs w/ contradictory evidence they gather & evaluate
- Become aware of automatic thoughts & change them
