  • Cognitions determine how we feel & act
  • Oriented toward cognition & behaviour, stresses role of thinking, deciding, questioning, doing & redeciding
  • Psychoeducational model: emphasise therapy as learning process & acquiring effective ways of coping w/ problems

  • Psychological problems rooted in childhood, but reinforced by present ways of thinking
  • Belief system & thinking causes disorders
  • Internal dialogue affects behaviour
  • Examine faulty assumptions & misconceptions and replace w/ effective beliefs

Some techniques:
- engage in Socratic dialogue/questioning
- debate irrational beliefs
- carry out homework assignments
- gather data on assumptions
- keep record of activities
- form alternative interpretations
- learn new coping skills
- change language & thinking patterns
- role playing
