- pyogenic meningitis
- anaerobic infection caused by bacterial fragilis(wound infection, intraabdominal infection, pelvic abscess, brain abscess)
- intraocular infection(endophthalmitis)
second line of drug to tetracycline in treatment of brucellosis, rickettsial infection

- bone marrow depression (aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia)
- hypersensitivity reaction- rashes, fever and atrophic glossitis
- n/v, diarrhea, pain at injection site
- superinfection
- gray baby syndrome
