A

Postpartum depression is a depression that some mothers experience after the birth of their baby. It is characterized by feeling very sad or overly anxious. Some mothers feel a lack of interest in their new baby. It is caused by the many physical and emotional changes that occur right after the labor and delivery.

A

They may have not developed their sucking reflex yet, they may have difficulties breathing, they may have low birth weight and trouble regulating theiry body temperatures.

What is the purpose of the mucus plug?

A

The mucus plug seals the cervix during pregnancy. It is a barrier that keeps bacteria from entering the uterus during pregnancy.

A

An incubator is a device that is used to help regulate the body temperature of newborns. It is enclosed and makes it easier to control the environment that the newborn is in.

What are forceps and why are they sometimes used?

A

Forceps are a device that doctors use to help pull the baby from the birth canal. They fit around the babies head. They are used when the baby is stuck in the birth canal and needs extra help during delivery.

What are fontanels and how do they make child birth easier?

A

Fontanels are the spots in the babies skull that are not fused together yet. We commonly refer to them as “soft spots.” They help during child birth because it allows the babies head to squeeze through the birth canal.

The Apgar Scale. It evaluates the physical condition of the newborn based on heart rate, breathing, muscle tone, response to stimulation, and skin color.
