o Male children with 6 or more childhood adverse experiences were >4,000% more likely to use IV drugs later in life
o 14% of men in prison and 36% of women in prison in USA were abused as children
o Abused/neglected children are 9 times more likely to become involved in criminal activity.

What are the signs from the child of abuse?
o Shows sudden changes in behavior or school performance
o Has not received help for physical or medical problems brought to parents’ attention
o Has learning (or attention) problems that cannot be attributed to physical or psychological causes
o Always watchful, as though preparing for something bad to happen
o Lacks adult supervision
o Is overly compliant, passive, or withdrawn
o Comes to activities early, stays late and does not want to go home
o Is reluctant to be around particular person
o Discloses maltreatment

o Looks primarily to the child for care, attention, and satisfaction of the parent’s emotional
needs

o Appears to be indifferent to child
o Seems apathetic or depressed
o Behaves irrationally or in a bizarre manner
o Is abusing alcohol or drugs
What are the signs from the parent or adult of sexual abuse?
o In unduly protective of the child or severely limits the child’s contact with other children, especially of the opposite sex
o Is secretive and isolated
o Is jealous or controlling of family members
What are our clinic procedures for suspecting abuse?
- Consult with clinical attending (Interns never report suspected abuse directly)
- Document reasons for suspicion and actions taken in clinic record (Attending to notify Associate Dean)
