Chemitry Metal Ions Flashcards
Ammonia formula
NH3
Ammonium formula
NH4
Where is ammonium found
Salts such as ammonium chloride
What is the test for ammonium
Place 1cm3 of NH4CL in tests tube
Add 1cm3 of NaOH(sodium hydroxide solution)
Warm gently
Hold down red litmus paper at tube mouth
Litmus paper turns blue(result0
What is the test for Metal ions
Add 1cm3 of metal salt solution to test tube
Add 5 drops of NaOH and shake gently
Result
Copper forms blue precipitate
Iron 3+ forms orange-brown precipitate
Iron 2+ forms green precipitate
Flame test for metal ions
Dip platinum wire in concentrated hydraulic acid (cleans the wire)
Hold wire in non luminous flame
Dip wire in metal salt and hold in the flame
Flame test for metal ions results
Lithium(li+)red
Sodium(Na+)yellow
Potassium(K+)lilac
Calcium(ca2+)orange red
Copper(Cu2+)
What is Hcl
Hydraulic acid
What is H2SO4
Sulphuric acid
What is HNO3
Nitric acid
Method for halide ions
Take 1cm3 of the halide solution to the test tube
Add 5 drops of nitric acid(HNO3)-(reacts with carbonate ions so there is no false positives)
Add 1cm3 of silver nitrate(AgNo3)
Explain why the reaction of yellow lead oxide with hydrogen is a redox reaction
Lead starts with oxygen but loses the oxygen. This is a redox reaction.hydrogen starts with no oxygen but gains oxygen. This is oxidation
How do u test for surface ion
Add 1cm3 barium chloride solution to a test tube
Add 5 drops of hydraulic acid(removes carbonate ions which would give a false positive white precipitate)
Add 1cm3 of potassium sulfate
Halide ion colours chloride
White precipitate
Bromine
Cream precipitate
