1. Show the bond formation that occurs to produce calcium fluoride. Start with the lewis dot diagram of atoms, and include the transfer of electrons and ions produced. (3 Marks App.)
draw diaagram
27
2. A piece of calcium oxide has a mass of 20.5 g. When heated, a chemical reaction happens. A solid piece of calcium and oxygen gas are produced. If the solid piece of calcium has a mass of 9.5 g, what would you predict the mass of the oxygen gas to be? Explain. (2 marks App.)
It would be 11 grams because the law of conversation states that the mass on both sides has to be equal.
28
The stomach contains a solution of hydrochloric acid called gastric juice, which has a normal pH of 2.5. After eating spicy foods and a large coke, the pH of your stomach drops to a pH of 0.5. a. You have two items in your medicine cabinet: Mg(OH), and H2CO2. Which medication would you take to bring your stomach pH back to normal? Explain your reasoning by discussing the type of reaction that occurs. (2 marks App.)
I would use Mg(OH)2 because it is a base. In order for you to neutralize an acid you need to use a base the reaction would be neutralization.
29
b. Does this increase or decrease the acidity of your stomach? Explaining by indicating the relationship between pH and acidity/basicity. (2 marks)
It will decrease the acidity in your stomach because to neutralize something you need a PH of 7. If the Ph is 2.5 then obviously when you neutralize it to 7 you will gain acidity.
