Chemistry The Law of Conservation of Mass (slide 4) Flashcards
Chemical equations have the following characteristics:
The arrow means
Reactants(state symbols)🡪 Products(state symbols)
“yields”, “forms”, “produces”
State symbols represent the state in which the substance is in
solid, liquid, gas, aqueous
Word and Chemical Equations
Word equations take word problems and represent the equation in words
Example:
sodium + chlorine gas 🡪 sodium chloride
Turn that into chemical formula
Chemical equations take word problems and represent the equation using chemical
formulas
Example:
Na(s) + Cl2(g) 🡪 NaCl(s)
Conservation of Mass
In a reaction, mass (and energy) cannot be created nor destroyed
The total mass of the reactants is ALWAYS
equal to the total mass of the products
mass of reactants =
number of atoms of reactants =
mass of products
number atoms of products
