Chemistry - Topic 4 Flashcards
What is the pH scale?
The pH scale is a measurement of how acidic or alkane a solution is.
What are the rules concerning the pH scale?
The lower the ph of the solution, the more acidic it is. The higher the pH of the solution the more alkaline it is
What is oxidation
It is the loss of electrons from a substance
What does a metal + oxygen give
Metal + Oxygen = Metal Oxide
e.g. Sodium + Oxygen = Sodium Oxide
What is reduction
Reduction is where in any chemical reaction the number of electrons is increased.
What does a metal oxide + carbon give?
Metal oxide + carbon = Metal + carbon dioxide
e.g. Iron oxide + Carbon = Iron + Carbon dioxide
What is displacement? Give an example using metals from the reactivity series.
A displacement reaction is where a more reactive element replaces a less reactive element in a reaction to make a compound.
e.g. Magnesium sulfate + Calcium = Calcium sulfate + Magnesium
What is the product of a Group 1 metal + water?
Group 1 metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What happens when a group 1 metal is added to water?
When group 1 metal is added to water, the metal melts to form a ball that moves around on the surface. It fizzes rapidly, and the hydrogen produced may burn with a flame being produced before it disappears. The further the metal is down the table, the more violent and rapid the reaction becomes.
Write a balanced equation for the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate. HCL + Na2CO3 = NaCl + H2CO3
Na2CO3 + 2 HCl → 2 NaCl + H2CO3
Is zinc more or less reactive than iron?
Yes it is, it is higher on the reactivity series.
What is the general word equation for the reaction of an acid with metal?
Acid + Metal = Salt + Hydrogen
Give the balanced equation for calcium and water.
Ca+2H2O→Ca(OH)2+H2
Will copper react with water?
Copper does not react with water
