Q

What is a genome?

A

A genome is one copy of all the DNA found in an organism’s diploid body cells - that is, its entire genetic material.

Q

What is Cystic fibrosis?

A

A genetic disorder in which those affected inherit a recessive allele from both parents. Diseases that we inherit from our parents are called inherited disorders.

Q

Explain how cutting down trees affects the environment.

A

Trees take in CO2 for photosynthesis, this reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Fewer trees mean less photosynthesis leading to less CO2 being removed from the atmosphere. Trees that are cut down are usually burnt, this increases the greenhouse effect by releasing the CO2 in the trees into the atmosphere, therefore increasing global warming. Also if you cut down lots of trees some species of trees could go extinct, which decreases bio-diversity.

Q

How would you describe the structure of DNA?

A

Your genetic structure is made from DNA, a polymer that consists of two strands that form a double helix (a twisted ladder).

Q

What is DNA and what does it do?

A

The code in your DNA tells your body how to make proteins. These are things such as enzymes and hormones. These proteins define who you are, your height, your eye color, and your blood type for example.

16
Q

Who made the theory of evolution?

A

The theory of evolution was proposed by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the nineteenth century.

17
Q

What is a species?

A

Organisms that can breed with each other to make fertile young.

18
Q

What is a fossil record?

A

All of the fossils that have been dicovered so far.

19
Q

What is NAtural selection?

A

The idea that some individuals in a population are better adapted than others. They are therefore more likely to survive, while less well adapted individuals die out.

20
Q

What are alleles?

A

One member of a pair or series of genes that occupy a specific position on a specific chromosome.
