Chemistry - Topic 10 using resources Flashcards
Describe the two sustainable methods of extracting copper
One way is Bioleaching which is when bacteria are used to produce a leachate solution that contains metal compounds.
Another way is Phytomining which is when plants absorb metal compounds when they are taken up through the roots. The plants are then harvested and burned. The metal is then extracted from the ash.
Define what a renewable source of energy or material is.
A material or energy that can be easily replaced or is always avaliable. For instance wood and solar energy.
Define what a non-renewable source of energy or material is.
A material or energy that can not be replaced or will run out if used to much. For instance coal and oil.
Give three examples of natural resources or materials.
Wood, Gold, Limestone
Give three examples of synthetic resources or materials
Plastic, Steel, Ceramics
Why is distillation an expensive method of producing potable water?
The major cost factor is equipment. The cost of energy required to heat the water to boiling in the distillation process is quite expensive.
What is sustainable development
Using resources to meet the needs of people today without preventing people in the future from meeting theirs.
